Hong Kong & Macao
Hong Kong and Macao were the last two stops of my trip across Southeast Asia with Shannon Smith. When we were arriving in Hong Kong it was just the beginning stages of the coronavirus affecting the world. You’ll notice in the photos that most streets are empty and everyone is wearing a mask, however, the one place that was still full of people was the food markets. When we went out to eat, most of the time we were one of two tables in the entire place. It was surreal. I wish I had considered the fact that this was something I was going to deal with back home in America, I don’t know why I wasn’t more mentally prepared for the quarantine here.
Hong Kong and Macao are just a thirty-minute ferry ride apart. You can notice the Portuguese influence in the architecture in Macao, they are also famous for their Portuguese egg tarts, so delicious! Hong Kong was full of the most interesting markets (flower markets, bird markets, dried fish markets, jade markets) and every evening at 7 pm they have a laser light show displayed from the skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island. We sat inside a restaurant one evening when it began and watched from across the Victoria Harbor, they even played corresponding music. It was fascinating.
